About The Role 

  1. Monitoring and providing appropriate clinical care (medical and surgical) to patients.
  2. Examining and talking to patients to diagnose their medical conditions.
  3. Ensuring the highest standards in patient care are maintained.
  4. Verifying complex diagnoses and facilitating treatment plans.
  5. Ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations and safety standards.
  6. Reporting to the senior management, as well as liaising between administrative and medical staff.

  8. Maintaining patient rights and being aware of cultural differences when dealing with patients.
  9. Liaising with other medical and non-medical staff in the organization to ensure quality treatment as well as in research and design of services and product offerings.
  10. Performing corporate wellness screenings, medical camps/outreaches as well as doctor at home service.
  11. Reporting on-call (off shifts, weekends, and holidays) as scheduled.
  12. Performing administrative duties and risk management.
  13. Managing allocated budgets and identifying areas of improvement in patient care.
  14. Keeping informed on advancements in the field and contributing to medical research programs.
  15. Admitting patients requiring special care followed by investigations and treatment.
  16. Any other duties as may be assigned by your supervisor. 

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree in Medicine with 1 - 2 years of clinical experience.
  • Possess current practicing license from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board.
  • Clinical risk management experience.
  • Valid indemnity cover.
  • Extensive knowledge of digital medical recordkeeping practices.
  • Tech-savvy and ability to quickly master the use of digital solutions such as Google Suite, Microsoft Office amongst others.
  • Advanced ability to ensure the highest standards in patient care and compliance with healthcare regulations.
  • Ability to keep abreast of advancements in the field of specialization.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
  • The ability to communicate fluently in French, both verbally and in writing would be an added advantage.
  • The ideal candidate should possess a valid international passport, have a liking for traveling, and demonstrate a keen interest in digital health and new developments in Digital Health.

Job Purpose: The Nephrologist job exists to provide specialized medical care to patients with kidney-related disorders, including diagnosis, treatment, and management of kidney diseases, as well as conducting dialysis procedures and kidney transplant evaluations at KUTRRH. The position holder collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes and contribute to research and education in the field of Nephrology. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Diagnosing and treating kidney-related disorders;
  • Managing patients requiring dialysis, including prescribing appropriate dialysis modalities and monitoring treatment effectiveness;
  • Evaluating and managing patients before and after kidney transplant procedures, including assessing transplant suitability, coordinating transplant care, and monitoring post-transplant outcomes;
  • Conducting diagnostic procedures such as kidney biopsies, imaging studies (ultrasound, CT scans), and laboratory tests to assess kidney function and identify underlying conditions;

  • Provide education and counseling to patients and their families regarding respiratory health, disease management, and lifestyle modifications;
  • Collaborates with other specialists such as thoracic surgeons, oncologists, allergists, and rheumatologists to provide multidisciplinary care for complex pulmonary conditions and comorbidities;
  • Implement pulmonary rehabilitation programs for patients with chronic lung diseases, focusing on exercise training, breathing techniques, education, and psychosocial support to improve quality of life;
  • Participate in research studies and clinical trials related to pulmonary medicine to advance knowledge and treatment options;
  • Stay updated with the latest developments in pulmonary medicine through continuing education and professional development activities;
  • Adhere to ethical and legal standards in patient care, documentation, and communication;
  • Mentor junior medical staff;
  • Any other duty that may be assigned from time to time. 

Qualifications and Requirements 

  1. Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from an institution recognized by the Kenya Medical Practitioners’ and Dentists’ Council.
  2. A Masters degree in Medicine in Pulmonary Medicine or equivalent from an institution recognized by the Kenya Medical Practitioners’ and Dentists’ Council.
  3. At least one (1) year work experience in Pulmonary/ Respiratory Medicine.
  4. Registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners’ and Dentists’ Council.
  5. Retention in the Kenya Medical Practitioners’ and Dentists’ Council register.
  6. Valid Practice License as a specialist from the Kenya Medical Practitioners’ and Dentists’ Council.
  7. Professional Insurance Indemnity Cover.
  8. Proficiency in computer applications.
  9. Fulfilled the requirement of Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.

Key Competencies & Attributes 

  • Critical Care Skills: Experienced in managing critically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU), including respiratory failure, sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and ventilator-associated pneumonia.
  • Smoking Cessation Counseling Skills: Provides effective counseling and support for smoking cessation, addressing tobacco addiction and its impact on respiratory health, and promoting lifestyle modifications for lung disease prevention.
  • Empathy and Compassion: Demonstrates empathy and compassion towards patients, showing understanding of their concerns, fears, and emotions related to respiratory health issues.
  • Effective Communication: Communicates clearly and effectively with patients, their families, and healthcare teams, explaining complex medical concepts in an understandable manner and promoting open dialogue for shared decision-making.
  • Active Listening: Listens attentively to patients' medical histories, symptoms, and concerns, fostering a trusting patient-provider relationship and ensuring thorough understanding of individual patient needs.
  • Collaborative Teamwork: Works collaboratively with nurses, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals to deliver coordinated and comprehensive care, respecting each team member's expertise and contributions.
